Cryolipolysis is defined as non-invasive cooling of adipose tissue to induce lipolysis – the breaking down of fat cells – to reduce body fat without damage to other tissues. The device is particularly appealing given that it is noninvasive, requires not much or no downtime for patients following treatment, and does not require local or regional anesthesia. Although liposuction is an effective therapeutic option for the removal of excess adipose tissue, it remains an invasive procedure and carries the inherent risks associated with surgery.

How does cryolipolysis work?

The fat cells (adipocytes) are more susceptible to cooling than other skin cells. Precise application of cold temperatures triggers the death of adipocytes.

What is the procedure of treatment?

One part of the device is a cup-shaped applicator with two cooling panels that is applied to the treatment area. The tissue is drawn into the handpiece under moderate vacuum and the selected temperature is controlled by sensors that monitor the heat flux out of the tissue. The patient is then discharged home and is free to resume normal activities immediately after treatment.

What all areas of body can be treated?

In 2010, the FDA cleared a cryolipolysis device for reduction of flank and abdominal fat. In April 2014, the FDA also cleared this system for the treatment of subcutaneous fat in the thighs. the fat under the chin (double chin) can also be treated with newer devices.

How many sessions of treatment are needed?

The number of treatment cycles needed depends on the treatment area. While good results at the flanks can usually be achieved with only two or three treatment, the back and the inner and outer thighs often require more than three treatments. Repeated treatment sessions should be spaced 8 weeks apart.

What are the side effects? Is the procedure painful?

Only mild, short-term side effects, such as erythema, bruising, changes in sensation, and pain may be reported by the patient. These usually resolve on their own in 3 to 5 days. Swelling and bruising of the area may be occur in rare cases.

How long does it take for the results to be visible?

The loss in volume of fat tissue occurs gradually over time as the fat cells are removed through an inflammatory clearing process that peaks within 2–3 months after a cryolipolysis session.
